On a fast moving first day at Mohali, India racked up runs even as they lost wickets. All of India's batters got off to starts with Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari getting fifties with the former missing out on a hundred narrowly.

Pant, who had come in at No. 5 this time around, started off rather watchfully. With a solid foundation already in place, Pant came in at a point when Sri Lanka were threatening to claw their way back into the game. Both Virat Kohli and Vihari had fallen in the space of 18 balls after having shared a 90-run partnership.

But Pant and Shreyas Iyer did not let the momentum slip, putting on a useful 53-run stand. And India did not slip even as Iyer was adjudged LBW for 27 against Dananjaya de Silva. Pant then put on a 104-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja to take India further up on the first day.
